The Black Hole and the Whisper

Scene 8: The Wordless Prayer

Stage is bare. No props, no clutter. Only a soft, steady light. The Scribe kneels at centre, head bowed. The Companion stands at a distance, silent, watchful. For a long time there are no words. The silence is its own presence.

Scribe (after a pause, voice low):
I have forgotten how to pray.
No hymns, no petitions, no bargains left in me.
Only silence.
Call it stoicism.
Call it surrender.
Call it what you will.

Companion (softly, stepping closer):
And what if silence is prayer?
What if this emptiness
is the truest form of asking?

Scribe (lifts his head, voice stronger):
Yes…
for words deceive.
They flatter.
They bargain.
But silence cannot lie.

Companion:
And in silence, what do you hear?

Scribe (after a pause):
Not thunder.
Not flame.
Only a whisper-
the kind Elijah knew.
Still, small, but enough.

The Companion kneels beside the Scribe. Both figures bow their heads. The light intensifies briefly, then softens to a quiet glow that lingers on them.

Scribe (whispering):
Silence is the only prayer that cannot lie.

Stage fades slowly to near-darkness, holding the stillness as long as possible before the scene ends.
