Fear – The Greatest Motivator

23 Sep

Have you ever settled in with a bestseller or snuggled up to watch a trending series, only to find inspiration arriving as an uninvited, yet welcome guest? Before long, they become muses, pulling at hidden threads within us that we never knew were waiting to be unravelled.

Not long ago, The Sandman reflected back to me a multitude of insights, and now it is Dan Brown’s The Secret of Secrets that has stirred familiar currents – whispers of the soul, death, and narratives steeped in religious themes. It feels like serendipity, but is it mere coincidence? Or perhaps, when we begin to explore themes of fear, death, and the mysteries of life, the world suddenly becomes a wall of mirrors? Books, dreams, and fleeting conversations all echo the struggles we harbour within.

Consider this: why did our ancestors huddle around the fire? Because the darkness was terrifying. Why did they plant and store food? Because the fear of hunger loomed large. Why did they build temples and offer prayers? Because the thunder and storms were too mysterious to confront without a name. Fear was their teacher – and it remains ours.

Yet, fear did not vanish with civilisation. The lions that once prowled outside the cave have transformed into the lions within our minds. We still fear, but now it manifests as rejection, failure, loneliness, and irrelevance. The world may have become safer, but our hearts remain vulnerable. We carry fears that are more difficult to name, harder to express, and even more challenging to conquer.

If you have ever concealed your true self for fear of rejection, you are not alone. If you have postponed a dream because the fear of failure outweighed your desire for success, you are not alone. If you have lain awake in the dark, haunted by unconfessed thoughts, you are not alone. Fear binds us together more than we care to admit.

This series is my attempt to name these shadows – not as an expert from a podium, but as a fellow traveller sitting beside you. Together, we will navigate the profound fears: death, hunger, the unknown, and the other, etc.. We will delve into the more personal fears: rejection, failure, irrelevance, and the self. We will explore whether fear is an intrinsic part of our being or a construct imposed by those who seek to control us.

Most importantly, we will attempt to argue that fear is not merely an enemy. It can be a companion, a teacher, and sometimes even the spark of courage itself. If fear is indeed the greatest motivator, then naming it is the first step toward our liberation.
